Dr. Steven Robert Allen

Dr. Steven Robert Allen, 74, passed away peacefully at his home on June 25, 2026, with his loved ones by his side. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, and devotion to his family, his patients, and the East Central Indiana community he faithfully served for more than 35 years.

Steve was born on November 21, 1951, in Brazil, Indiana, to Tom and Joan Allen. He graduated from Brazil High School and Indiana University in Bloomington before earning his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. In 1981, Steve and his wife, Cindy, founded Internists Associated, now known as Muncie Primary Care. Together, they built a practice dedicated to caring for patients throughout Muncie and the surrounding communities. Alongside countless exceptional nurses, medical assistants, office staff, and fellow healthcare professionals, they created a culture centered on compassionate, patient-focused care.

Few physicians have the privilege of caring for multiple generations of the same families. Over more than three decades, Dr. Allen earned the trust of thousands of patients who knew him not only as their physician, but as a compassionate listener, trusted advisor, and steadfast advocate for their health. His impact on the community will continue to be felt for generations.

While medicine was his calling, Steve's greatest joy was his family. He shared more than fifty wonderful years with the love of his life, Cindy, and cherished every moment spent with his children, granddaughters, sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

A passionate Indiana Hoosiers fan, Steve counted watching Indiana football win the national championship this past season among the highlights of his life, rivaled only by the undefeated 1976 Hoosier basketball championship team. Rarely seen without a Diet Coke in hand, he also enjoyed photography, watching the Indianapolis Colts, computers, flower and vegetable gardening on an epic scale, springtime morel mushroom hunting, vacations to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and, above all, spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Cindy (South) Allen; his son, Andrew Allen; daughter, Megan (Allen) Zelasko, and her husband, Joey, and his granddaughters, Anna and Olivia Zelasko. He is also survived by his sisters, Connie (Allen) Rentschler and Cindy (Allen) Smith; brothers-in-law, Pete Rentschler and Joseph Smith; and many beloved nieces and nephews: Neil Rentschler; Ali Rentschler Vish and her husband, Vikram Vish; Aaron Smith and his wife, Tara, and their daughters, Gabriella and Elena; Ryan Smith and his wife, Kelsey McHugh, and their daughter, Maya; Annie Smith; and Courtney (Smith) Allred and her husband, Ethan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Joan Allen.

Steve will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, physician, and friend whose kindness, humility, and dedication enriched the lives of everyone who knew him. His legacy will live on in the family he loved, the community he served, and the countless patients who entrusted him with their care.

An open-house Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at The Lodge at River Valley Farm. All whose lives were touched by Steve are warmly invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.
