Joseph M. Gehring

Joseph M. “Joe” Gehring, 77, of Fortville, IN passed away Thursday August 30, 2023, at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital in Indianapolis.  Joe was born November 25, 1945, in Monticello, KY to the late Homer and Sallie (Richards) Gehring. 

Joe was a self-employed master interior trim carpenter for 45 years.  He attended St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and was happily involved in many of the church activities.  He enjoyed gardening, camping, grilling out, reading, watching University of Kentucky basketball, and spending time with family and friends. Joe loved spending time on his back porch rocking in his chair and enjoying the visits from the neighborhood “princes and princesses”.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of nearly 34 years, Jonnie (Steele) Gehring, whom he married on November 25, 1989; daughter Porcha Fuller, son Jansen (Kelly) Gehring; grandchildren Cole and Jesse Gehring; sister Sherry Threet; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by son Chris Gehring; sister Nancy Corder; and brothers, Donald, Dickie, Martin, and Billy Gehring. 

Joe was a gentle man with a warming smile and a glint in his eye making you think he knew more than he was willing to tell. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.  Please watch a UK Basketball game and think of Joe.

Friends may call on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Seals Funeral Home, Fortville.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 523 S. Merrill St., Fortville, IN 46040. Burial will follow at Gravel Lawn Cemetery, Fortville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joe’s name may be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
