Katherine Ines (Lamb) Shoults

Katherine Ines (Lamb) Shoults, affectionately known as Kay, went to be with the Lord on August 22, 2026. Kay, a long-time resident of Fortville, passed peacefully at her home in Fishers.

Kay was born on June 21,1925 to David Edgar Lamb and Tycia Vivian (Sowash) Lamb in Modoc, IN. She was the youngest of five daughters and grew up in Modoc on her family’s farm. Kay attended Modoc School, a one-room schoolhouse that at one time had been taught by her mom. Kay loved music and learned to play the piano, xylophone, and marimba in her teens and was a member of the We Three and Us musical group. She graduated from Modoc High School in 1943, part of a senior class of six students.

It was while living in Modoc that Kay met the love of her life, Maurice "Bud" Lorenze Shoults after his family moved in 1941, to a farm down the road from her home. The couple began to date, but before they could wed in 1943, Bud was drafted into the U.S. Army. He and Kay often wrote to each other during their three years of separation until Bud was honorably discharged and returned to Indiana. He and Kay were married on April 4, 1946, at the Indianapolis Friends Church.

The couple moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where Bud studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburg. Upon his completion, “they came back to Indiana with a roll of pennies and $8.00 to their name” as Kay loved to say.

Kay gave birth to their daughter, Linda Kay Shoults, on August 22, 1949, in Indianapolis. Linda was the “apple of their eye” and she was loved by all who met her. The family moved to Fortville, shortly after Linda’s birth, so Kay could be closer to her sister Uta Mae. The five sisters and their families were a tight-knit group that celebrated holidays and often vacationed together through the years.

For 66 years Kay and Bud called Fortville home. Kay was an active member of Fortville United Methodist Church where she played the organ for 35 years and sang in the church choir. She would give special performances on the marimba as well. For nine years, Bud and Kay led the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Kay was also an active member of the United Methodist Women’s organization. Kay and Bud had many close friendships and fond memories from the activities they shared with their Sunday School Class and the Youth Group they led.

She worked at Indiana Oxygen, and Allison Diesel before Linda’s birth and once Linda was school age she took a position at United Telephone in Fortville, where she worked for 35 years before retiring at 65. In her free time, Kay loved to knit and she and her dear friend Shirley Rockhill were members of the Fortville Book Club.

In 2016, Bud and Kay moved to Corydon, IN, to live with their daughter and Jim Hays on his family farm. Bud and Kay became members of the Corydon United Methodist Church and made friends easily there. In 2021, Bud and Kay moved to an apartment at Cedar Court in Corydon, as Linda began to lose her battle with cancer. Linda passed in January of 2022. In July of the same year Bud and Kay contracted Covid and became seriously ill. It is then they decided to move to Hamilton Trace Assisted Living in Fishers. Kay’s loving husband, Bud passed away in May 2025, shortly after they had celebrated their 79th anniversary.

Kay was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters: Dorthea Seagrave (Hanford), Olive Isley (Darrell), Uta Mae Longerbone (Arthur), and Pat McIntyre (Claude) and her nieces Deanna Mae, Betty, Nancy, Connie, MaDonna, Mary Lou, and Barbara.

She is survived by her son-in-law, James Hays, her niece Greta Sue Johnson and great nieces Lee Ann LeBrun, Lisa Houser-Thomas, and Twila Burge as well as many other nieces, nephews and special friends, including Elaine Stiffler of Greenfield, Floyd Sheldon of Yelm, Wash, and DeEtta Koning of Lafayette.

A memorial service will be on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 3:00 P.M. at Seals Funeral Home, 122 W. Staat Street, Fortville, IN, with a gathering following in Friendship Hall at Gateway Community Church 125 E Staat Street, Fortville, IN.
