Ralph E. “Gene” Ray, 79, of Greenfield, formerly of Indianapolis passed away on October 15, 2021, at his home. He was born March 21, 1942, in Indianapolis to Charles E. and Rula (Blice) Ray. Gene was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service retiring in 1997 after 34 years’ service. He then went to work for Community Hospital East in the mail room and retired after 10 years’ service.
Gene was an active member of the Free and Accepted Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a Past Master of the Brookside F & AM Lodge No. 720 as well as a 50-year member. Gene was also active in the former Brookside OES Chapter No. 481 (now merged with Oakland Chapter 159). He was also a 50-year member and a Past Worthy Patron of the chapter.
Gene was a member of the Allisonville Christian Church and formerly of the Centenary Christian Church which merged with Allisonville Christian Church. He was also a fan of Indiana University Basketball, the Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Colts.
Gene is survived by his wife Margie (Sharpe) Ray, whom he married on June 19, 1965, children: Kenny (Marjorie) Ray of Lady Lake, FL; Brenda (Tim) Escue of Camby and Donna Callahan of Greenfield; grandchildren: Brandon (Julie) Ray, Aaron (Stephanie Marino) Ray, Emily (fiancé Tim Daniel) Escue, Hanna Escue, Tara Callahan, Tyler Callahan and Bryce Callahan; 6 great-grandchildren and life-long friends Bob and Betty Spargur. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert “Bobby” Ray.
Friends may call on Friday, October 22, 2021, from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the Seals Funeral Home, Fortville. Order of the Eastern Star Ritual will begin at 7:30 pm and be performed by the Oakland OES Chapter #159, followed by Masonic Memorial Rites by the Brookside F & AM Lodge No. 720. A funeral to celebrate Gene’s life will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 11:00 am at Allisonville Christian Church 7701 Allisonville Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46250 with Rev. Diane Spleth officiating. Please be aware that masks are required at Allisonville Christian Church for the funeral service. Burial will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis.
