Raymond Lee Helms

Raymond "Lee" Helms, 70, of McCordsville, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2020, surrounded by family. Ray was born April 14, 1950 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents were the late James H. & Mary (Stephens) Helms. He was a graduate of the very first class in Mt. Vernon High School’s history in 1969. After high school, Ray was drafted into the United States Army. He married the love of his life, Lydia (Brown) Helms February 24, 1970. Ten days later, he went to Vietnam, where he served as a medic. He was wounded in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart medal.

Ray was a lifelong farmer in Hancock County where he served as President of the Hancock County Soil & Water Board and a board member for Farm Bureau. He was active in a Home Fellowship.

Ray is survived by his loving wife, Lydia; daughters Jenifer (John) Boehm, Jamie (Jon) Hoversland and Julie (Brent) Meyer; grandchildren Lake Boehm, Jackson, Jilian, Jude & Jake Hoversland; twin sisters Marilyn Owens and Carolyn (Jim) Spangler; sisters Martha (Roger) Hamilton, Donna (Bob) Mens and Sharpy (Derek) Romeril; brother Chuck (Brenda) Gremore; as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above; birth mother Marilyn Gremore, as well as brothers Bob Gremore and Jack Loudermilk.

Friends may call on Friday, September 18, 2020 from 6 to 8 pm at Helms’ Barn 6731 North 500 West McCordsville, IN 46055. A funeral to honor Ray will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at 11:00 am at the barn with visitation from 10 am until the time of service. Jeff Thayer, Kenion Coleman and Scott Potter will be officiating. Burial will follow the funeral at Mendon Cemetery, Pendleton, IN. The family has requested that everyone in attendance to wear face coverings the entire time there, and have asked for there to be no hugging.
